FD Chaplain Services, Inc. was born in the midst of Hurricane Irma, September 11, 2017. An initial organizational meeting had been scheduled for 9/11, the anniversary of the devastating attacks on the United States that killed 343 firefighters and many civilians. The impending hurricane with its anticipated storm surge forced the postponement of that meeting. Founder Mark Goodman texted back and forth on 9/11 with Nate Burley, Steven Bunn and Jenna Sherman to verify their safety in the storm and to affirm the decision to create an organization to promote and fund the work of Fire Chaplaincy, and to provide for training to equip Chaplains to serve their departments and communities.
On January 17, 2018, Articles of Incorporation were submitted to the State of Florida to formally create the organization, FD Chaplain Services, Inc. On January 25th, Mark Goodman, Nate Burley, Jenna Sherman, Donnitta Goodman, and Steven Bunn held the first official Board meeting. The Board elected officers, adopted by-laws, and appointed Mark Goodman to the position of Executive Director with direction to file the necessary forms and information to gain 501 (c) (3) status with the Internal Revenue Service. FD Chaplain Services, Inc. moved forward offering Chaplain training and providing Chaplain Services.
